The Korea Pavilion was created for Expo Milano 2015, dedicated to the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. Conceived by the Korean architectural studio Archiban, the pavilion occupied a prominent position in the western area of the Expo site and was designed to establish a continuous relationship between the Decumano, the landscape and the adjacent water channel.

SOLIDS, working in collaboration with the engineering firm Work in Progress, was responsible for the execution of the design. The pavilion covered approximately 3,880 square metres, with around 2,200 square metres of covered area and a maximum height of 17 metres.

The visitor experience unfolds through the relationship between internal and external façades. Outdoor spaces act as gathering and public-use areas, while the enclosed interior accommodates the pavilion’s exhibition and functional programme. A metal structural system combined with lightweight infill and advanced external cladding technologies made it possible to achieve the sinuous surfaces envisioned by the designers. The result is an expressive temporary architecture that translated the identity of the Korea Pavilion into a fluid and highly recognizable presence within Expo Milano 2015.
